Mathematics

Mathematics is, at its core, the search for pattern and structure — building the vocabulary and theory to describe, explore, and extend what's found. Every course balances creativity with rigorous logical reasoning, introducing influential mathematical ideas while building genuine problem-solving ability.
Students choose between a B.A., a broad foundation in mathematical fundamentals, and a B.S., which adds further coursework for students with a strong interest in science or engineering. Both prepare students well for graduate study. The department also supports students pursuing Virginia teacher licensure in secondary mathematics through the 5th Year MAEd Program, and offers coursework for elementary education certification.
Two minors are available: a Mathematics minor and a Data Science minor offered jointly with the Computer Science department, combining programming and statistics for students in fields like biology, business, chemistry, and earth and environmental science.
