Global Experiences
The Batten Honors College believes that environmental stewardship and leadership are global endeavors. In order to better understand the interconnected nature of human existence and its impact on the globe, all honors students are required to complete a global residency requirement. In consultation with the Dean of the Batten Honors College, Director of Global Engagement, and major advisor, students develop a plan that aligns with their academic, professional, and personal goals. Students are recommended to study abroad during their sophomore or junior years.
The BHC offers grants to aid in completing the Global Residency Requirement. Grants must be applied for through the Dean’s Office. Grants are applied on a case-by-case basis and depend on a number of factors including: cost of travel to the study away campus, visa fees, tuition, and other potential expenses. Some study away programs and opportunities may have additional costs.

The Global Scholars Program offers Virginia Wesleyan University students the ability to receive credit toward their major, minor, or general education requirements while living and studying in another part of the world for an entire semester. Students may study abroad, for either the fall or spring semester, starting their second year and may select from a wide variety of programs. All students undergo special advising and must receive approval from their VWU major advisors and the Registrar’s Office to ensure that courses taken while studying abroad will fulfill VWU degree requirements.
