Semester & Summer Study Away Programs
Batten University offers two pathways for mid-length and long-term study away: the Global Scholars Program for semester study abroad, and direct-enroll partnerships for summer study abroad. Financial aid, external scholarships, and SHIPP grants are available to help make these experiences accessible.
Global Scholars Program — Semester Study Abroad
Spring 2027 Application — All Programs (ISEP and Exchange)
Deadline: Monday, September 7th
The Global Scholars Program offers students the opportunity to earn credit toward their major, minor, or general education requirements while living and studying in another part of the world for an entire semester. Students may study abroad during the fall or spring semester, starting their second year, and may select from a wide variety of partner programs.
Eligibility Requirements
- Enrolled at Batten University at the time of application
- Minimum 2.75 GPA (note: some programs have higher requirements)
- No honor code violations
- No major student conduct violations
- At least second-year standing at the time of departure (some programs require third-year standing)
- Cannot be studying abroad during your last semester at Batten University
- Must return to Batten University for at least one full semester after completing the program

Financing Semester Study Abroad
Semester study abroad at Batten University is more affordable than most students expect. During their semester abroad, Global Scholars typically pay Batten University’s tuition, fees, room, and board — meaning your existing scholarships, loans, and grants (with the exception of Work and Learn) can apply. Students in some direct exchange programs and the Batten Global Japan program pay room and board directly to the provider in-country.
Additional expenses include airfare, visas, international health insurance, application and placement fees, in-country travel, and personal expenses.
Global Scholars are encouraged to apply for external scholarships, including the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship and the Fund for Education Abroad. Additional options are listed at GoAbroad’s Guide to Study Abroad Scholarships.

Semester Study Abroad Partners
Jane P. Batten & David R. Black School for International Studies at Lakeland University Japan
This partnership gives Batten students the unique opportunity to take general education, major, and minor courses in Tokyo — one of the few study abroad programs where students can undertake paid internships of up to 28 hours per week alongside their studies. Students take classes with local Japanese students and those from other Asian countries, and can participate in cultural activities such as tea ceremonies.
International Student Exchange Program (ISEP)
ISEP provides students with the opportunity to enroll at local universities in locations ranging from large metropolitan cities to small villages. Programs are offered in most academic disciplines. Applicants rank their choices and are placed according to availability.
Heidelberg University of Education
Students study German language, literature, history, and civilization at the Pädagogische Hochschule in Heidelberg — a charming romantic town where you can walk along the Philosopher’s Path and in Goethe’s footsteps.
Irish American Scholars Program, Northern Ireland
Students may study at one of four Northern Ireland universities, with courses available in almost every discipline. It may even be possible to complete student teaching abroad. Students live in residence halls with local and international students. Note: Cumulative GPA requirement is 3.2. Students apply in spring for fall or spring of the next academic year.
Kansai Gaidai University
Students immerse themselves in Asian culture alongside hundreds of international students. The Asian Studies program offers courses in religious studies, gender studies, literature, history, business, and studio art. Spring semester students may also take part in a short-term internship. Clubs and cultural activities are available to engage with local students.
Rikkyo University
Students experience a private liberal arts university in central Tokyo, with courses in business, political science, international studies, communication, history, sociology, philosophy, and many other fields. Students live in international dormitories and participate in clubs and cultural activities to fully immerse themselves in Japanese culture.
Summer Study Abroad
Students who study abroad during the summer may enroll in programs in a wide array of disciplines, including courses that count toward major or minor requirements. SHIPP grants are available to assist with program and course fees.

Direct-Enroll Summer Partners
Florence University of the Arts (FUA), Italy
FUA allows students to experience Italy by living like a local. Courses are offered in art, business, communication, biology, chemistry, mathematics, sociology, and history. The program features experiential learning including community service, regional field trips, and extracurricular activities.
Harlaxton College, United Kingdom
Students study in an English manor in the quaint area of Harlaxton, England alongside faculty and students from around the world. Courses offered in British studies, history, mathematics, political science, psychology, education, and English, along with unique clubs and sports.
John Cabot University, Italy
Located in Rome, John Cabot University offers a wide array of courses in business, communication, political science, English, history, art history, psychology, philosophy, and archeology. Students live in dormitories or apartments with American, international, and Italian students.
National Chengchi University (NCCU) International Summer School, Taiwan
Students travel to Taipei to take courses in History, Political Science, Economics, Communication, and Mandarin Chinese. The NCCU Summer program includes social and cultural field trips including a food tour and a tea sommelier visit.
Rikkyo University, Japan
Rikkyo University offers an intensive language and culture program during January Term and Summer Session. Students earn four Batten credits and take part in numerous field trips and cultural activities.
