Batten University offers faculty-led study away courses that include a travel component to a domestic or international destination. Courses run during January Term, the academic year, and Summer Session. For more information about individual courses, contact the faculty instructor directly.

SPAN 310: Spanish Speaking Localities and Culture

Tentative Travel Dates: January 9–17, 2026

Examines the relationship between geography, natural and urban landscapes, and the cultural richness of Ecuador. Students visit Quito, Cuenca (UNESCO World Heritage Site), and smaller villages in the Napo Region.

HUM 201: Oxford Faith and Literature

HUM 201: Topics in Religion — Oxford Faith and Literature

Tentative Travel Dates: March 13–20, 2026

Takes students to Oxford and surrounding areas to explore the literature and world of C.S. Lewis, tracing the footsteps of the authors who influenced him and connecting their sites with his writings.

POLS 346/347: Model United Nations

Tentative Travel Dates: March 29–April 2, 2026

Participation in the National Model UN Conference in New York City, replicating the process international learners use to find solutions to major global problems.

CLAS 356: Batten University in Greece
Summer Athens, Greece

CLAS 356: Heroes, Kings, Tyrants — The Cradle of Democracy in Greece

Tentative Travel Dates: May 31–June 14, 2026

A 15-day journey through Greece’s historic cities and archaeological sites, exploring the legacy of ancient Greece — from Spartan military training to the philosophical roots of democracy — and its relevance to leadership and governance today.

Global Engagement Course Grants

The Office of Global Engagement offers course grants to help offset the cost of enrolling in a Batten University study away course during the academic year. SHIPP grants are available for study away courses taken during the Summer Session.

Eligibility

  • Enrolled as a full-time student at Batten University during the current academic year
  • Minimum GPA of 2.7
  • Demonstrate significant financial need (through FAFSA’s Student Aid Index and a Need Statement)
  • Submit an application to your chosen study away course before the grant deadline
  • Pay the study away course deposit before the grant deadline

Award Criteria

  • Financial need
  • Academic performance
  • Quality of the Global Engagement Statement
  • Priority given to students enrolled in 4-credit courses and those who have not previously received an Athenaeum Global Engagement Grant
