As we embrace this season of giving, it is important for us to honor those who have given so much in many ways to our region. We recently celebrated many important and generous supporters of Virginia Wesleyan and our community.
It was such a pleasure to welcome Alice Clarke to campus as we hosted members of the Clarke Heritage Society. The society is named for Alice and her late husband Lambuth, president of Virginia Wesleyan from from 1966 to 1992, who planted many of the seeds of Wesleyan's future success. We thank Alice for her continued support and remain grateful to the Clarkes for their inspiring legacy. Many of our supporters attended the luncheon, including Jim Bergdoll, Vice President Emeritus, and Henry Light, member of the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) and strong supporter of the Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant Program (VTAG). We congratulate our good friends who were honored at the 15th Annual Darden Awards for Regional Leadership: David Goode and Susan Goode received the Individual Darden Award, and the law firm of Kaufman & Canoles was honored with the Corporate Darden Award. David Goode, in accepting with his wife Susan the award for their philanthropic contributions to Coastal Virginia, closed by challenging all of us to make our own commitment to improving our community, saying, "Thank you for recognizing what has been done and thank you for recognizing what can be done." David and Susan have been longtime supporters of Virginia Wesleyan. Susan currently serves as Vice Chair of our Board of Trustees. Among many friends at Kaufman & Canoles, VWU Trustee Vince Mastracco is a partner and strong VWU supporter. We congratulate Vince and his colleagues at the firm.
At an emotional evening at YMCA JT's Camp Grom in Virginia Beach, hundreds of friends gathered to celebrate the retirement of Billy George, CEO and President of YMCA of South Hampton Roads. A native of Chester, Virginia, he began his YMCA career as a camp counselor at YMCA Camp Thunderbird in Richmond. Billy has been a Trustee, partner and friend of Virginia Wesleyan for many years and was the driving force behind the founding of Camp Red Feather on campus--a YMCA regional summer day camp serving nearly 300 children per day. In recognition of his 44 years of YMCA service to the youth of this region, we announced at the celebration the naming of the road leading to the Blocker Youth Center on campus as William H. "Billy" George Circle. As we celebrate and thank Billy, we welcome and congratulate VWU President's Council member Anthony Walters who was named President and CEO of YMCA South Hampton Roads.
Thank you to these civic leaders and strong partners of Virginia Wesleyan; we are so grateful for all you do for our campus, community, and beyond.

Dr. Scott D. Miller is president of Virginia Wesleyan University. Respected as one of the most entrepreneurial higher education executives in America, he is in his 29th year as a university president. Dr. Miller has dedicated his career to the opportunities available through education. He especially values the small, classical, liberal arts college environment that offers students personalized pathways to life and career success. Previously, he was president of Bethany College (2007-2015), Wesley College (1997-2007), and Lincoln Memorial University (1991-1997). He was also Executive Vice President (1988-1991) and Vice President for Development (1984-1988) at Lincoln Memorial University and Director of College Relations and Alumni Affairs at Rio Grande College (now University) in Ohio. In this fourth chapter, "Opening the Campus to Comprehensive Education and Careers," University of Hartford President Dr. Gregory S. Woodward examines how the rigid academic structure of traditional higher education can evolve to meet the needs of modern students. He describes how his institution took a deeper look at what students truly wanted from their college experience, both in terms of career readiness and personal development, and worked to support those goals.
